In a small, shadowed alley of a bustling city, a story of remarkable compassion unfolded. A young boy, unkempt and rough around the edges, wandered aimlessly. In his hands, he clutched a birdcage, its once shiny bars now rusted and bent. Inside, several tiny birds fluttered nervously, their feathers ruffled and eyes wide with fear.
This boy, whose days were often filled with mischief and mayhem, had found a new plaything. He’d caught these birds, intending to torment them, seemingly unaware of the preciousness of the life he held in his hands. Dr. S.D. Gordon, a preacher known for his kind heart and wise words, happened upon this scene. His eyes fell upon the cage and the frightened birds within.
Curious and concerned, Dr. Gordon approached the boy, asking him about the birds. The boy, with a mischievous glint in his eye, explained his plan to play with them, and once bored, feed them to his cats! Moved by compassion and a deeper understanding of freedom, Dr. Gordon asked to buy the birds. The boy, taken aback and sensing an opportunity for easy money, demanded two dollars. Without hesitation, Dr. Gordon handed over the money, and the boy disappeared down the alley, leaving the preacher with the cage.
In a quiet, sheltered spot between the buildings, Dr. Gordon gently opened the cage door. He whispered words of encouragement, tapping the rusty bars softly. One by one, the birds bravely fluttered out, their wings carrying them to the freedom of the open sky.
“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” — John 8:36
SPIRITUAL THOUGHT
This simple yet profound act of kindness was more than just a gesture towards the birds. It symbolized the deeper, spiritual liberation we find in Christ. It reminds us that in the grip of life’s challenges, we too can experience freedom. Just as the birds were freed from their cage, we are offered release from our own confines. Through the compassion, mercy and love of God, we are given the chance to soar into the realms of true freedom.
MY PRAYER
Lord, in Your infinite wisdom and love, You offer us freedom from the things that threaten our well-being. Help us to embrace the liberation You provide and to extend the same kindness and mercy to others. Thank You for the lessons of compassion and love shown through such a simple, yet profound act. May we always cherish and pursue the freedom that comes from Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
